A Monumental Segway Tour of Washington DC

After a day of walking, seeing the Archives, Capitol and Library of Congress, it was such a relief to be on a Segway tour of Washington, DC, seeing all the monuments.

Segs in the City store

We took the Segs in the City Segway tour of Washington, DC monuments.  I would take a Segway tour of Washington, DC again in a minute, as we saw so much.

How to Ride a Segway

The Segway is easy to learn and can be operated with a slight lean forward or back or to the side.  You step on a flat platform between two large wheels, and have handlebars to hold onto.

The team gives you safety equipment (helmets and reflective vests) and training in the Postal Plaza prior to setting out.

You’ll learn how to move forward and back on the Segway, how to turn, how to speed up and slow down, why you don’t want to hit your wheels against another Segway, and how to park your Segway (stepping off).

Controlling the Segway soon becomes second nature.

An Earpiece for History

The guide for our Segway tour of Washington DC

Once everyone’s comfortable, you turn on a communicator earpiece so you can hear your guide give instructions or tell you history of the places you’re smoothly gliding by.

Our guide gave us tips about how to interact with pedestrians while on the Segway, too.

Our Segway Tour of Washington DC

On your way, there’s so much to see. We would never have made it the 6 miles if we had to walk.  You can pause to take pictures, and in some places we stopped the Segways to walk around the monuments, which was wonderful.

taking photos at a stop on the tour

On our tour we paused as we went by the Jefferson Memorial, for photographs. We stopped to see the Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Memorial and Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

We stopped, too, in front of the Reflecting Pool, to visit the Lincoln Memorial. You can see the Washington Monument from here. We walked over to the nearby Korean Memorial, and Vietnam Memorial.

Segs in the City card

At the end of your Segway tour of Washington DC, they give you a loyalty card (“I’ve got Segsy legs”) so you can rent a Segway from them without having to spend time on the training.

Here are some other places to try in Washington, DC.

Enjoyed June, 2012.
