Authentic Caribbean Roti at Island Foods North York in Toronto

If you’re looking for authentic Caribbean roti, Island Foods North York is a good place to satisfy your craving.

Island Foods is a busy place, which is a good sign in my books.

Should I Order To Go?

There is often a lineup from the counter to the door, and it moves at a reasonable pace.  Although they have a number of tables, they can be filled with people.  Depending on the time you arrive, you may have your choice of tables readily available or you may choose to take your food to go.

Meals to be eaten on site are served on styrofoam plates. To go, they have plastic containers, or the rotis without gravy come in foil coated envelopes which keep them nice and hot.

Many Kinds of Authentic Roti, Including Vegetarian

There are a wide variety of rotis available:

Shrimp
Chicken (thighs)
Channa (chick peas)
Potato
Plain dhalpouri (with gravy or plain)
Boneless Chicken (breast meat)
Beef
Eggplant
Boneless Goat
Vegetable
Spinach

All rotis start with fresh dahlpuri, two thin layers of flour flatbread, thinner than a tortilla, with ground seasoned split peas between them.  The rotis all come with curry potato in them, and it’s just the right amount to not overwhelm the meat.

You can order many of these as a dinner, which comes with curry potatoes, mixed vegetables and rice and peas.

My Favourite Order

boneless goat roti covered in curry gravy with a Ting bottle at Island Foods North York

I ordered a boneless goat roti and a Ting (yeah, Ting!) to go since I wasn’t sure if I’d get a table. The boneless goat roti, with the delicious gravy and potatoes, was an authentic roti and was deeeeee-licious! Seasoned perfectly and the meat was amazingly tender.  I wanted another, even though I knew I’d never get through a second one.

In addition to the grapefruit Ting soda pop, they offer a variety of drinks from Grace as well as regular pops and juice.

Snacks

My friend loves the Island Foods North York doubles (a Trinidadian snack) with channa.  Their Jamaican-style beef patties are worth trying, too.  Also good to take to-go to snack on later.
