Point Loma Seafoods in San Diego is Like Eating at a Fish Market

Visiting Point Loma Seafoods in San Diego is somewhat akin to going to a fish market and having them making it into a meal for you right there. It’s very different than a typical seafood restaurant, since it truly is a fish market with big glass counters full of fish. They just offer cooked versions of the fish, too.

I have loved Point Loma Seafoods San Diego location for years. We typically stop here on our way into San Diego. My favourite thing to eat here is a decadent large shrimp cocktail. I’d take it outside to sit on the picnic benches. Years ago they also had a covered patio, in case it rained.

This time we brought a group with us. It had been way too long since we’d been here. I was so surprised at the “grown up” renovations, fancy parking scheme and additions that I thought I was in the wrong place!

Tables are available both outside and inside. There are even umbrellas on the tables outside. And a whole new indoor seating area.

Indeed, I was reassured when I walked in. Lovely saltwater scent and glass cases of fresh fish. They’ve added a sushi chef station now. All in all, it’s much the same, with improvements.

Do we look at the fish or the overhead menu? Maybe the beer menu?

They have both hot and cold food, including a great clam chowder, fresh sourdough bread and homemade tartar sauce. The menu shows what’s fresh. And they have the freshest, best quality fish I’ve ever seen in a fish market.

You may be looking at that menu for a while. It’s tough to choose! They’ve also expanded their beer menu, and we were happy to see a great selection of craft beer.

So, we ordered the beer first.

Before or after dining, you can take a walk along the water. The salt air, the boats, and even the seagulls make for a slice of California we miss when we’re in Toronto.
