In Hawaiian Gardens, in an otherwise unassuming Mexican restaurant, there’s a tortilla factory. Julian’s Tortilleria makes fresh tortillas on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
You can order Mexican food at the counter and seat yourself in the festively decorated dining room, with tables for 2 or 4, which can be easily moved together for larger parties.
Papel picado (“perforated paper”) hang along the ceiling and paintings reminiscent of Mexican people and culture adorn the walls.
I ordered two soft tacos with rice and beans.
These tacos use the small tortillas, made in the tortilla factory on premises. They serve them as double tortillas in each taco, familiar to those of us who love Mexican food.
The tacos were garnished with minced onion, cilantro and a sprinkling of shredded lettuce.
The meal was served with a pickled pepper and tortilla chips, with deep red (medium) hot salsa.
I loved every bite.
Here are some places to explore in nearby Long Beach.
