Surfers know good food, and the Sugar Shack Cafe in Huntington Beach pays homage to them in their decor and in the casual style of the restaurant. It’s a Main Street institution, family-owned and run.
If you’ve ever surfed, or swam for an extended time (or, really, any sport), you’ll likely remember that afterwards your stomach is rumbling and you’re ready to dive into some comfort food.
On a recent trip, a celebrity surf couple prop a surfboard against the wall, then sit down at the next table for a meal and an interview. Pro Bryan Van Arsdale and Karly Freeman.
Both a writer and photographer from a large newspaper are there taking photos and getting comments while the poor couple orders food (Bryan gets the HSS Special and Karly the Michele’s Special) and don’t have much of a chance to eat.
Open for Breakfast and Lunch
Whether you surf or are just a hungry local or traveler, the Sugar Shack can take care of you. They open early in the morning at 6am and close mid-afternoon by 2pm (weekdays) or 3pm (weekends).
This visit to the Sugar Shack, I sat in the back area, which is like being in a colourful covered backyard patio, somewhat open to the pleasant breezes and safe from inclement weather.
The Food at the Sugar Shack
I ordered Keppler’s.
Keppler’s is the Sugar Shack’s take on an Eggs Benedict, which they also serve. Keep the English muffin and Hollandaise sauce. Change the poached egg to scrambled, the ham to bacon, add a sliced tomato and avocado, and you’ve got yourself a delicious, authentic Huntington Beach concoction.
It’s served with hash browns, or you can substitute fresh fruit for a small upcharge. You can order it as a “Whole” or a “Half,” but the menu warns you that you can’t split the dish.
I have to remember to add avocado to my Eggs Benedict in future. This was really good. I already substitute Canadian bacon or peameal for regular bacon when I can. Will have to ask for avocado, too.
In addition to the breakfast menu with all kinds of egg dishes (some paired with pork chops, chicken or steak, and breakfast burritos, you’ll find a soup of the day, chili, salads, sandwiches, burgers, and even meatloaf (Tuesday’s lunch special).
The kids’ menu should put a smile on the little ones’ faces, with Mickey pancakes, grilled cheese, and white rice with cut up chicken breast.
Here are some other places to try in Huntington Beach.
