SmoodS restaurant (full name “SmoodS Dining, Living Room, Kitchen and Music”) is such a funny little restaurant, just off the lobby of the BLOOM! Hotel in busy Brussels. The atmosphere is ultra-cool, bordering on chic or kitsch. It’s full of bead curtains, taffeta-covered low light, and plush hideaways, right up against cool metal and throbbing European dance music.
Is it a bar, a meet-up, a club or a restaurant? Maybe a bit of all of these.
How does SmoodS Restaurant Treat Solo Diners?
As a solo woman traveler, I’m never quite sure what to make of these too-hip places, particularly when they’re attached to my hotel. The restaurant was nearly empty, with some hangers-on lingering over drinks before heading home.
I was, of course, not surprised to be seated at a small two-chair table in the dark SmoodS restaurant bar, right next to the kitchen entrance and a server drink station. Far away from any of the interesting people and plush furniture.
With some effort and after a lengthy wait, I did manage to get moved by a begrudging staff, to the edge of a long table within view of the open kitchen.
They waved off my suggestion of taking an open semi-circle red upholstered booth, right next to two women who had occupied one of the booths.
This new spot they put me, I thought, would at least provide entertainment as people sat down behind the beads and the chefs danced their culinary dance to the beat of what sounded like workout tunes.
The bead curtains dividing the long tables here brought to mind our new tech offices in Toronto, with never-ending tables for desks. I wondered how long it might be before others joined me.
Would it be that booked-up that they couldn’t have found room for me earlier except at the least desirable table in the room?
Dining at SmoodS Restaurant
While this restaurant prides itself on seasonal products on its menu, I found the fish I ordered, for the price, was just okay. It was not as moist or flavourful as I would have liked, although the sea bass filet with spinach and tomatoes was appetizing in presentation.
Dessert, on the other hand, was clever (a cacao chocolate bean shape) and delicious, with accompanying vanilla and caramel sauces, with berries.
Service Makes a Difference
The service at SmoodS restaurant is a low point, and I would not recommend it for solo travelers or those who wish to be in and out in a timely manner. The food itself was fine, but comes with a higher price tag, and it’s not that impressive.
Here are some other spots to try and food experiences in Belgium.
