Our Filipino friends pointed us to authentic Filipino food at CASA Manila in the northern part of Toronto. The decor here is really sweet, reminding you you’re in a different, Filipino, restaurant land.
We had a group of 5, all with separate needs and separate bills, and the staff managed it well.
We started with pork spring rolls (petite, hard fried lumpia with accompanying sweet and spicy sauce), one of the dishes featured on the TV show, “You Gotta Eat Here.”
For authentic Filipino food entrees, most ordered the pork or chicken or veggie Adobo with rice as it was recommended as a house specialty. Mine was mixed pork and chicken, and it was really good, primarily due to the sauce. The pork included some thick cuts of pork belly, with layers of fat that were unappealing to me, but the other pieces of pork and the chicken pieces were delicious.
The dessert flan was good, not overly sweet, but a bit too thick and chewy.
We were fortunate enough to see the dramatic delivery (drums banging) of a Kamayan Feast at another table, which looked like fun. Heaps of rice and meats on banana leaves spread across the table.
My only caution is that parking is limited and with the piled up snow in winter, even more precious. The good news is there are spots reserved for Casa Manila so you could get lucky.
You can order delivery through Skip the Dishes.
Here are some other places to try in North York.
