We loved our visits to the 12welve Bistro & Tapwerks, attached to the Brock St. Brewery in a newly-completed brick building in downtown Whitby.
Start with a Craft Beer from Brock St. Brewery
The hostess escorted us to a booth near the bar. It was quite comfortable. We ordered a Brock St. Blonde and an Irish Stout to drink.
Dig in to a Good Meal
It was lunchtime. We had beer in front of us. We decided to share a meal.
The Lamb Dip Sandwich, served with fries, is big enough to share. It’s served with a delicious gravy/au jus which was full of lamb flavour. I’ll order this again.
The next time we came, I tried the Spicy Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich and my friend had a killer Smoked Meat Sandwich with slaw and mustard aoli on rye.
The Spicy Korean Fried Chicken Sandwich at 12welve Bistro has a Craft Beer lagered blonde ale-infused crispy chicken, layered with kim chi, cucumber, slaw, and angry mayo. The sandwich is so big I split it in two. It was spicy for sure, but not unmanageably so for people who can handle a medium spice level. It might not be hot enough for those who want serious spice, and it’s too hot for those who need something mild.
For an upcharge, you can order the Sweet Potato Planks with chipotle dipping sauce.
12welve Bistro has vegetarian and vegan plates on the menu. They offer gluten-free options, too.
The 12welve Bistro & Tapwerks Location
The walls are brick and the lighting is industrial looking, with an old style charm. Large garage-door style windows let in light and, I imagine, will be opened on warm days.
Washrooms are non-gendered, private rooms. They keep them sparkling clean.
Upstairs is a private, rent-able event space.
Parking is available on-street or in local municipal lots a block away, off of Colbourne Street.
