50 Noted Portland Restaurants & Local Food Stops in Maine

So Many Recommendations, I Had to Map Them All

I’m quite excited to be exploring Portland restaurants in Maine this May.  In the lead-up to my travels I’ve put together this map of notable restaurants, craft breweries and distillers, special local food stops and gourmet shops.

I have added the restaurant map here for you to build your own list of places you’d like to try while you’re visiting.  These were cobbled together from publications which have listed prized restaurants, local reviews, recommendations from fellow foodie travelers in Facebook groups, and, for Stonewall Kitchens, my own familiarity.

Who Knew This Portland Was Such a Food Destination?

Portland, Maine, is giving the other coastal Portland a run for its money.

Dubbed a food destination by the New York Times, awarded “#1 Foodie City” by People magazine, “America’s Foodiest Small Town” and “2018 Restaurant City of the Year” by Bon Appetit, with multiple chefs receiving accolades from Food and Wine Magazine and the James Beard Foundation, there’s certainly something going on for foodies in Portland, Maine right now.

Women In Travel Summit

I’m heading to Portland for the 6th annual Women In Travel Summit (WITS) by Wanderful in early May.  I’ll be there with hundreds of other travel influencers, creators and industry members.  I’ll be seeing friends I met at last year’s conference in Quebec City – and getting to know new creators in the fam tours and sessions we’ll be attending pre- and post-conference.

Checking Off The Foodie Traveler List

While there, I’m planning to explore as many of these Portland restaurants as I possibly can in the week I’m in town. I might even make up my own food tour.

I’ve got a brewery tour booked through the conference, so some of the craft breweries and a distillery will be checked off my list (check, check, check!).  On a bike tour of the local lighthouses, I should be stopping by the Lobster Shack at Two Lights for a lobster roll (check!).  I’m even scheduled to ride out on a Lucky Catch lobster fishing boat to learn more about the daily routines of a Maine lobsterman. I have no idea if I’ll take a lobster off the boat to be made into dinner, but we’ll see (check?).

I’m looking forward to stopping at the Farmer’s Market to see what delights I can bring back with me, or eat while I’m in town.

Of course, I’ll share all of my adventures with you, on Tour and Table social media accounts and I’ll write a wrap-up here as well.

The Map of Notable Portland Restaurants and Food Spots in Portland, Maine

Below is the promised map with:

  • Portland restaurants (in red)
  • Portland bakeries (in brown)
  • Portland breweries (in yellow)
  • Portland gourmet food shops (in blue)

This is an interactive map.  All of these groups are in separate layers, so you can turn them on or off as you prefer (see below for directions).  If you’re attending the Women In Travel Summit (purple), key locations are on this map as well.  There are duplicates of some place names (for example, Tandem coffee shop is in two locations in Portland).

If you want to see this as a Places list on Google, you can access my Notable Restaurants Saved Places List.

Have you been to Portland?  Am I missing any of your favourites? Please add them in the comments, below!

I was so looking forward to my trip to Maine and wish I could have tried these restaurants during WITS19. I’ll have to plan a personal trip once my health is in better shape. It sounds like a great foodie town.

Sounds like fun, doesn’t it? I have a thing for lighthouses, too. The lobster roll is calling to me!

Sounds like a very ambitious week! You may have to stay at least a month:-)

    1. Allison Fraser

Oh, Irene, I was thinking the same thing! I may have to enlist some friends to go restaurant-hopping and share tastes of all the goodness. A month would be wonderful, though!

Now I know who to follow around at WITS! I’m planning to hang out with the food travel bloggers, but in case, I get lost, with your map, at least I won’t go hungry.

That is awesome! Hoping we get to share a taste or two (or three!) together when we’re in Portland.
